Kent Porth was born and raised in Lexington, South Carolina where he still resides today.

A self-taught photographer, Kent's academic and professional background involved extensive training for the "indoor" world instead of the "outdoor" world where most of his photography occurs.  Kent earned an accounting degree from the University of South Carolina where he attended on a full academic scholarship.  After earning his accounting degree, he was licensed in South Carolina as a Certified Public Accountant while he was earning his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law.  After earning his law degree, Kent earned an advanced law degree in Taxation from the prestigious New York University School of Law.

After returning from New York, Kent practiced tax and employee benefit law for over 20 years with the prestigious Nexsen Pruet law firm in Columbia, South Carolina.  He became an equity partner in the firm, and was one of the first attorneys at Nexsen Pruet to be listed in Best Lawyers in America.  Kent maintained that listing, as well as an AV rating from Martindale & Hubbell, before retiring from the full time practice of law to pursue a full time career in nature photography.  Kent maintains close relationships with many of the attorneys and clients from his time as an attorney, as many of those individuals and companies became some of his first customers in the new photography venture.

Kent's photography focuses primarily on landscape and wildlife images.  In recent years, Kent has developed a thriving art reproduction business.  On the advice of some of the more successful nature photographers whom Kent was blessed to meet, he invested in the necessary equipment to handle all of his printing and framing needs in his own studio.  The acquisition of state of the art printing, mounting, mat cutting and other framing equipment has allowed Kent to develop a robust printing and framing business in addition to the production of his own images.  Please see the "Kent's Studio" information page for a discussion of his studio capabilities.

Kent has photographed extensively in some of the most beautiful parts of North America and Africa.  While these travels are necessary to "feed the passion" that every true nature photographer feels, it is the more local images from South Carolina and surrounding states that tend to be the top sellers.  Making images of familiar locations that stand out from the crowd is a continuing challenge.

In October of 2010, Kent earned his top accolade when his image of two Axis deer in Texas was selected as one of the top 10 images in the Wildlife division of Nature's Best Photography's prestigious Windland Smith Rice International Photography Awards competition.  You can read more about this award in the "Nature's Best" information page.
